Diabetes used to be very rare; it only happened to about 1 out of 30 people, typically in old age.
But we ignored growing inactivity and unhealthy nutrition for decades.
Now almost 1 of 5 children are obese. And 1 out of 3 children will develop diabetes later in life—many of them as young adults in their 20’s or 30’s.
Thanks to cuts in recess & PE at school + far too much screen time at home, a majority of children are not active enough & are at-risk.
Alarmist? About ¼ teens already have pre-diabetes. Half of them are expected to develop diabetes within 10 years—doubling their health costs—unless they change their habits.
And obesity is now the 2nd biggest preventable cause of cancer—after smoking. No wonder the Mayo Clinic has declared: “Sitting is the new smoking.”
A recent Cleveland Clinic study (Mandsager et al, 2018) even indicates that being unfit is more dangerous for your life than smoking, heart disease or diabetes!
