Diabetes used to be very rare; it only happened to about 1 out of 30 people, typically in old age.
But we ignored growing inactivity and unhealthy nutrition for decades.
Now almost 1 of 5 children are obese. And 1 out of 3 children will develop diabetes later in life.
Thanks to cuts in recess & PE at school + far too much screen time at home, a majority of children are not active enough & are at-risk.
Alarmist? About 1 in 5 teens already have pre-diabetes—more than half of those teens could develop diabetes in their 20s & 30s!…unless they change their habits. And according to the American Cancer Society, obesity is now the 2nd biggest preventable cause of cancer—after smoking.
No wonder the Mayo Clinic declared: “Sitting is the new smoking.”
A recent Cleveland Clinic study (Mandsager et al, 2018) even indicates that being unfit is more dangerous for your life than smoking, heart disease or diabetes!
