You care deeply about our country & our national security including military recruitment… and you count on veterans benefits—all of which are now under threat.

No one cares more about the future of our country than our veterans.  And you have shown how much you care, through your service to our nation—often at great personal risk.

For almost 50 years, we have depended on volunteers signing up to join the armed forces.  So what happens now that we are having major problems in recruiting—due above all to almost 4 in 5 young people being unqualified to join…particularly because of their poor health and lack of fitness?

These recruiting problems started over a decade ago.  As concerns increased about growing child inactivity, unhealthy nutrition and obesity, retired generals and admirals started speaking out.  By 2020, over 800 of them wrote to the Secretary of Defense:

“Without coordinated action, these trends pose a significant threat to the future of the all-volunteer force.”

[BTW, when they wrote that letter, 71% of 17-24 year olds were not qualified to enlist—now three years later, 77% are not qualified!]

Not Qualified: 77% of Americans Ages 17-24

This finally came home to roost in 2022, when for the first time since the all-volunteer force was created in 1973, the Army fell 25% short of its recruitment goals.  Secretary of the Army Wormuth announced:

“The number one priority, in my mind…is fixing our recruiting problem.”

The Navy and Air Force have also been experiencing significant recruitment shortfalls.

What is more, and related to this:

Federal deficits and national debt are skyrocketing—driven above all by rising health care costs from chronic diseases…many of which we could have prevented with more physical activity & healthier nutrition earlier in life.

How can those of us who care so much about our country stomach passing on a massive debt burden to future generations—a debt which could & should have been so much smaller?

How long before talk grows of cutting the military… and cutting veterans benefits…in order to reduce deficits & debt?

The plain fact is:  in order to protect our military national security as well as our financial national security, we need to have a much healthier & fitter younger generation—not one like now that is “unfit to fight”…and developing chronic health conditions early in life.

If today’s children were more active and learned healthier nutrition in childhood, we would have plenty of qualified applicants to join the armed forces—rather than barely 1 in 5 of 17-24 year olds qualified.

And our nation’s health costs would not threaten federal spending on defense, veterans benefits and other critical areas.

How Can I Help?

We do not need your money.

We have wealthy individuals and foundations to support us financially.  But to get the large-scale public-private funding that we need to develop healthier habits K-12 with Healthy Students Healthy State, your involvement would really help.

We need your help in getting the word out—not your money!

Red-state legislators such as in Arizona listen especially to veterans.

You may be able to spend a little time each year to contact government officials and others.  It would be another service you can offer to your country.

We will give you all the information you need.  All you really need to do is send an occasional email or letter, or pick up the phone.  We will even have some suggested talking points for you!

One quick easy step that you can take now to help us is to fill out our Contact form

(We only use your email address for our own work. And we do not solicit individuals who are not wealthy for donations.)

When you fill out the Contact form, you can specify if & how you want us to follow up with you.

Another thing you can do is to encourage your veterans association, such as the American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars—or even just your own personal network of friends who are veterans—to support Healthy Students Healthy State.
